Memorial Take this opportunity to visit the cemetery. Notice its size, and relative cheerfulness, with so many plants, flowers and candles. Public sculpture. Note the modernist cubes marking graves from the '40s. In the distance noticed a pile of stuff reminiscent of an impromptu ghetto memorial for a shot gangster in West Oakland. Upon closer inspection, see it is a childrens memorial. Experience it. Go out of the cemetery, crossing the street and find comfort in the view. Through the monumental gates, be in awe of pre-socialist architecture. You will now be on the POT path, and can visit the memorial for partisans and antifascists shot during the occupation. Soon on the right is a big construction site, future home of a stadium, and former place where Janez used to catch frogs. Just beyond it is some angular architecture. You will continue through a quiet neighborhood in Beigrad and arrive in front of the Water Company. Look at the colorful apartments across the street. If you are caught in a rainstorm, this may be a good place to stay put for a while. Spomenik Izkoristi prilonost, da običe pokopaliče. Bodi pozoren na njegovo velikost in relativno razigranost, s tevilnimi rastlinami, roami in svečami. Javna skulptura. Doivi to izkunjo. Nato zapusti pokopaliče, prečkaj cesto in najdi uteho v razgledu. |
|
Colors Go to the intersection of Topinska & Linhartova - by fortunate accident you may be directly in front of Janezs house. He lives in one of these three buildings. Just down the street from them on the left are garages, painted a combination of greens, grays and reds that are anything but Christmas like. If you are an artist or designer, or want to be, use these colors. (Janez) |

Lea Go to Tivoli Castle. Walk around it counter clockwise, through the educational public art piece, and to the back of the building, noticing the mundane nature of it. Keep walking around until you reach the second path on right. There are four tables. Bring a beer, a cigarette, a joint, or a boy/girl youd like to kiss. Spend an afternoon or evening feeling like a teenager. Leave before dark. Tam so tiri mize. |

A little bit of America, I think. elko lived in a house on v Murglah, and thought it may be haunted. It turns out it kind of was. There had been a double homicide there: husband-kills-wife-then-himself, but youd never know it from its appearance. Upon entering the street from Cesta v Mestni log, feel a little bit of American Suburbia. Feel Jyderup or Chandigarh, too. Explore the sweet tree lined lanes. Midway down the street notice the tile work on the right. Celebrate the modernism. Feel the quietude. Walk a dog along the path beyond the houses on the west side of the street. |

A Day of Quiet Fitness Be in good physical condition. Have a good, lightweight mountain bike & helmet. Pack a picnic & water. From the center, travel southeast on Dolenjska until you pass the gas Station. At the second bus stop, Peruzzijeva, cross the street and notice that many Chinese restaurants in Ljubljana use the same font for their logos. A few meters to the right will be the POT path on the left. You may have the privilege to see a car with the Jesus is My Airbag bumper sticker. Climb the steep hill on the right, either on the bike or the bike on you, until you reach a crossing path. Go left then right. Sit down at one of the picnic tables to rest and eat. Continue on downhill with bike and helmet. If this path is too adventurous, move onto the larger gravel road when you come across it. Find gratitude when you make it to the other side of the hill. Heading west along the river will take you back to the center. Dan tihega razgibavanja Imej kondicijo. Imej dobro lahko gorsko kolo in čelado. Pripravi piknik koaro in vodo. Morda bo imel edinstveno prilonost, da bo tu zagledal avto z napisom: 'Jesus is my airbag'. Zavij proti zahodu in se ob reki vrni v center. |

Modern Minimalism Visit the first floor of the City Gallery. Experience the glowing off-white minimalism. Enjoy the exhibition but dont let it distract you. River Meet Urban. He might offer to take you on his canoe in the river. Do not ask him- that would be rude. If he does not offer, rent or borrow one and travel south of the city, astonished at the lush setting just minutes from the center. Wave to the inhabitants. Look for the house with an English phone booth in the yard. Note the selection of ducks. Take one of the small canals and pretend you are in Keralas backwaters. Then have a beer at the bar just across from the rivers split, next to the boat launch. Go on an evening there is a concert at Krianke. Bring a drink and admire the free concert setting. Look up and you might find a human monument. Prinesi si pijačo in občuduj brezplačni dogodek na odprtem. Če pogleda navzgor, morda zagleda človeki monument. |

Nove Fuine Go to Nove Fuine, arriving by Zaloka. You will not miss the Toplarna and its 80s paint job. This place will be a blessing as it is a marker in case you get lost. Take a right at the big street towards then end of the apartment blocks. Cross the bridge halfway watching the waterfall & mill. Turn back and head left on the small path. Nearby you will meet a group of men playing chess in the park. Join them, to watch or play. Go around the catering school and note the neon logo. Compare the difference of the neighborhoods look from the front and the back. Taking the small path by the river noticing the wildflowers in bloom. You will see a place to cross over to the other side, if you wish. Do polovice prečkaj most in si oglej slap in mlin. |

Sunday Morning Wake up very early, arriving at Preeren Square by 6:30. Sit on the church steps and wait for the garbage man to arrive. Notice how he wears the same color orange as the construction fencing, and that it looks really good on him. Greet him or bring him some pie. You can find him again crossing the three bridges every day at around 2:30 to get a cold drink at the supermarket. Note the serious nature of nuns exiting mass, opening your imagination to what life is like for them. Watch the light change quickly. |

Exhibitionists There are at least 15 places to see exhibitionists in Ljubljana. They have been spotted in Tivoli, by the castle, and on the streets in the center and outlying neighborhoods. Have you seen any? Where? What did you do? Perhaps an artist/activist should make motion-activated light projections where exhibitionists have been seen. Ekshibicionisti Ekshibicioniste najdemo v Ljubljani na vsaj petnajstih različnih lokacijah. Opaeni so bili v Tivoliju, ob gradu in na ulicah v centru in blinji okolici. Ste katerega mogoče videli? Kje? Kaj ste naredili? |

Sofija Sofija used to walk her niece to school using a small path between Dunajska and Vojkova in Beigrad. Walk a child from home to school and back. Ask her/him to describe the way. See if she/he has a more complex relationship to the route than you do. Prosi ga, naj ti opie pot. |

Lunch Start at the beginning of Strelika, wondering if the construction will ever end. Take a left at Roka, and a right at Poljanska cesta, careful around that turn, and go to Grad Kodeljevo. Pass the pool, trying not to get hit by a car. You might not realize it is a castle. Eat a reasonably priced lunch while watching the wind blow the colorful pinwheels. Lie on the ground under the big tree. Stick your head in the hole and yell. Ride back the same way, stopping at Hofer to get cheap Italian wine & mozzarella. The woman who is working may be very nice to you, which is surprising for a place like that. On the way back, go to Poljanski nasip. Wonder what that big abandoned building could become if it werent being town down. |

Bellevue Go to the Bellevue building in Tivoli. Bring a portable music device and a dancing partner, a cello or contrabass, or a singing partner. There is a big old gazebo under a big dead tree. In it, do a slow dance- a waltz perhaps, or make music, relishing in the rich resonance. Bellevue Pojdi do stavbe Bellevue v Tivoliju. Pripelji prenosni predvajalnik glasbe in plesalca, violončelo in kontrabas ali pevskega partnerja. Pod velikim mrtvim drevesom, se nahaja velika stara vrtna uta. V njej počasi zapleita- morda kak valček, ali izvajajta glasbo in uivajta v bogati resonanci. |

Kodeljevo- tepanjsko naselje From Grad Kodeljevo, go west. Do not drive as there are always police pulling over random cars. On the bicycle or by foot, go on the right side and pass over the small bridge/path with the lush, vine-covered wall. At the traffic light, look left. Continue to tepanjsko Naselje. On the right side will be some stores and a caf. If you are a musician, go through the small walkway to its left, and downstairs on the right. If the door is cracked open, you are in luck. Listen for bands practicing. When there is a moment of silence, knock on the door and ask if you can join them or watch them rehearse. Nadaljuj pot do tepanjskega naselja. Na desni strani bo nekaj trgovin in kavarna. |

Navje Go to the small cemetery behind the train station, on Vilharjeva and Robbova. Exchange a new set of keys on the grave that has some. Find the pre-teens who may be verbally harassing you. Hand them pieces of paper and markers, asking them to use their creative expression and play tic-tac-toe on the paper instead of the graves. (Dao) |

Ronik Drive yourself and a strong friend or two to the bottom of the walking hill of Ronik. Do this soon, and do it on a Sunday. Remember not to be too noisy else you might disturb the birds (note the illustrated sign). Climb up just past the first hill, and go to the house that is getting remodeled. Go explore it, noticing the craftsmanship of the old balustrades that are ready to be reused inside. How would you use the rooms? How would you decorate it? Out back, you will see the old stairs themselves are in a trash pile. Rescue them, to reuse as stairs or paddles or art materials. After you have tucked them away in a secret place, continue up the hill to have mushroom soup at the restaurant with the grumpy waiter. Do not sit outside if you are allergic to bees. Satiated, run back down. Dont forget to pick up your new/old materials. Pack them in your vehicle and head to the restaurant by the parking lot, to have Turkish coffee and a sweet. Ronik Zapelji sebe in e kakega močnega prijatelja, do peakega hriba Ronik. |

Beyond Nove Fuine This might be a good journey to have an alternative romantic date. From the old bridge in NF, go east on the POT path. Head through fields until you come to the huge highway. Maja says it was much nicer here before the highway was built. I can imagine, but one might as well make the most of it. The path will bring you underneath it. Sit and listen to the rhythms made by the cars passing above. Play along with it, in case you have an instrument with you. Regard the large-scale graffiti. When it is a good time to leave, continue on the path, crossing back over the top. Now its up to you, depending on what happened under there, what to do next. |
|
iska Start with a coffee or lunch at the caf next to the pond. Following the POT path, head north, regarding the radical modernity of the new construction ahead. When there is a jog in the road, be thankful for the nice person who made the signs about how to continue on the path. Sometimes it is not so well marked. Pass the apartment buildings with the extravagant terrace gardens (you can find comparable ones along Trnovski pristan). Youll come across a lawn with 2 hills. Run up and down them, or, if there is snow on the ground, practice easy skiing. Pass through an area with many seniors. Why not sit down for a moment and chat? Take a left on Celovka, to quickly reminisce about getting your yearly bus pass at the Ljubljanaski Potniki Promĕt while noticing the various shades of green. Try to take a picture and see what happens. Turn around, taking a left on Litrostrojjska, and a right on Gorazdova, where you might meet a man who lives there named Goraz. Its true- he will show you his identification. Whittle your way through the small streets to Černetova, and take note of the sign for the Bakery. Take a right at Verovkova, until the end, where there are some abandoned buildings. Consider squatting them, if you are inclined. Otherwise they are going unused. At the end of the street, notice the homemade fence on the left, but take a right & cross the street. You will see a small, very old church. Go to the phone booth and call your parents, telling them you are at church. It wouldnt be a lie. ika Začni s kavico ali kosilom, pri kafetariji zraven ribnika. Priel bo do trate z dvema hriboma. Videl bo majhno, vendar zelo staro cerkev. Pojdi do telefonske govorilnice in pokliči svoje stare. |

Beigrads Secrets Travel up Dunajska, making sure to look up occasionally to see large signs. At Bezigrad cesta, take a left. Have some tea in the cozy, quiet yard of Izloba. Visit the old stadium. A wall and temporary fence surround it, but to the right there is an opening where you will enter a lush garden. If you bring a small ladder or a very tall friend, you can put it against the brick wall and climb into the stadium, feeling like a star. Imagine the crowds roaring. When you are satisfied, exit and take a quick right onto Vodovodna, then another on olgerjeva, then a left on Pribinova, to enjoy the surprising ivy-covered houses. Continue underneath the garages, lowering your head not to get hit, to Novinarska ulica. What does it remind you of? Go behind the Mercator building. There is a public sculpture. Wouldnt it be grand as giant beanpole? Maybe you and some friends could juts put a pot or two of climbing vines underneath it and see what happens. Continue on Dunajska up near the edge of the city, pop in behind the World Trade Center, where youll find the Do-bop caf. Have a 3-euro cocktail and never pay 6 again. |

iska II Starting at St. Francis Church, wonder what Mr. Pečnik was thinking. Continue over the train tracks into the sports park. Jog or ride around the tracks. Make a lemonade stand in the abandoned kiosk. Lemons, water, and sugar. You could probably sell it for a euro a glass, or be generous and give it away on a hot day. Its especially refreshing with ice and a sprig of mint. ika II Začeni pri cerkvi Sv. Nadaljuj preko eleznikih tirov, v portni park. Tekaj ali se vozi po stezah.Zaupčeni kiosk, preuredi v stojnico z limonado. Limone, voda in sladkor. Posebej osveujoča bo, če bo dodal led in meto. |

Trnovo Visit the only bridge in Europe with trees growing on it. This may be the bridge where there is a paper boat race each year. Continue along Gradaka (it changes names twice) to reach the old pools. If you are a skateboarder, go wild. Imagine the pristine blue and the sound of splashing water and children of the pools previous life. Trnovo Običi edini most v Evropi, na katerem raste drevje. |

Tivoli-Mostec Make your way on the mid-sized path to the right of Tivoli Castle. Climb up the steep hill, and take a right at the crossroad at the top. Continue along bearing left until you see a tall brick building on a dirt path on the right. Inside, make a performance or camp on the platforms. Back down the hill, continue to the skiing practice ramp. Imagine it in 2 dimensions and compare what it suggests. Without being obvious, enjoy the fit bodies of the joggers, but watch out- they may run you over. Try not to get lost. |
